I'm sick with anxiety over this hostage deal, and I can't imagine how high the tension must be in Israel. Never mind the awfulness that Israel must release something like 200 murders - I'm crawling up the walls wondering how many of the 33 hostages will still be alive when they're freed. How many of them will be freed at all? This first phase stretches out over weeks and weeks. Will the deal hold long enough that all 33 get out? I pray it will.
It’s clear to me that Hamas will never do anything that advances peace. If they make a concession it’s out of desperation or because they think the harm to Israel outweighs the benefit to Israel.
The timetable of release, for the minority which is even included in phase I is designed to maximize pressure on Israel to abandon the war and leave Hamas in power. That’s why Hamas has agreed (if they don’t back out at the last moment, as they have done several times in the 14 months since they actually released anyone).
Thank you for the article. There is a lot to think about. But it's the concept of "purity" that I struggle with. My mind has always thought to pair it with "wholesomeness" which absolutely cannot happen is this discussion.
And those awful tunnels - the culmination of all the hate and all the waste, and of course all the loss to the Palestinians who could have built a paradise of their own. Concrete used for evil and hate.
The ceasefire is up in the air, but we need it shored up - we need this to hold.
As someone who used to believe he was progressive, and now is in the liberal space, I am happy to say that because progressives couldn’t eject radicals (instead embraced them), I am done with progressives and their causes. I’m for gay marriage, I’m 100% opposed to queers and all their vicious political goals, including a genocide for 7.7 million Jews. Every dollar I donated to help Democratic Party candidates in elections now goes to defeat progressives in primaries, across the country. I will never donate to a progressive NGO again. I stopped donating and listening to NPR, and removed all their feeds. Anything I can do to help defund their organizations and causes, I’m fully behind.
They’re enemies of democracy, supporters of terrorism, and rotten to the core with genocidal antisemitism.
Wonderful article by Brian Henry. And a good comment to follow on the hostage deal by David Roytenberg. I listened to a couple of briefings on the topic and while the news said that Natanyahu said that Hamas is not happy with something and appeared to hesitate, the deal will go ahead as far as the briefings noted... From their comments to Hashem's ears... may it all be so. If it does not go on to the next stage, Israel can cross that bridge and deal with that too...
